Rusizi–Bugarama Road Upgrade Underway, 11km Asphalt Section Planned
The rehabilitation of the Rusizi–Bugarama road has officially commenced, marking an important step toward improving road infrastructure and connectivity in Rwanda’s Western Province.
The project, which began in February 2026, aims to enhance mobility, support trade, and improve access for communities and businesses in the region.
Initial works are currently in progress, with the contractor focusing on site preparation activities, including:
- Establishment of a crusher site
- Setup of a construction campsite
These preparatory activities are essential to ensure smooth execution of the main construction works.
Ongoing Road Maintenance
In parallel with the preparation phase, maintenance works are being carried out on damaged sections of the road to ensure it remains passable for road users.
This includes:
- Repairing deteriorated sections
- Improving road usability during the construction period
Asphalt Upgrade Planned for 11km Stretch
As part of the project, 11 kilometers of the road will be upgraded to asphalt standard, specifically:
From Nzahaha to the Kamanyora border
This upgrade is expected to significantly improve:
- Travel time
- Road durability
- Cross-border connectivity
Additional Section Pending Funding
The remaining section of the road, from Kamembe to Nzahaha, is also planned for rehabilitation.
However, this phase is currently pending funding, with efforts underway to secure the necessary resources to complete the full corridor.
