Gicumbi Stadium Rehabilitation Nears Completion as Synthetic Turf Installation Reaches 98%
Gicumbi Stadium is among the three stadiums selected to receive support for synthetic turf installation through a partnership between FIFA and FERWAFA under the “FIFA Forward Project,” a program aimed at developing football talent and improving sports infrastructure in Rwanda.
The stadium has been undergoing major renovation and rehabilitation works since October 2024, marking a significant investment in modern sports infrastructure in Northern Rwanda.
Construction activities officially began in October 2024 with the development of perimeter walls and spectator stands. By November 2024, earthworks and field preparation activities were progressing steadily while preparations for synthetic turf installation also commenced.
In January 2025, the stadium structure started taking shape as major construction works advanced. By March 2025, covered spectator stands had already been installed, giving the facility a more modern appearance and improving comfort for future fans and visitors.

Finishing works continued throughout April 2025, including landscaping and improvements around the stadium surroundings. By October 2025, renovation works had reached 90% completion as external beautification and infrastructure works continued.
As of May 2026, installation of the synthetic turf has reached 98% progress, bringing the project close to completion. The modernized facility is expected to become one of the key sports venues in the region.
Gicumbi District Mayor, Nzabonimpa Emmanuel, confirmed that the remaining works include installation of stadium lighting systems that will allow both day and night matches, alongside completion of supporting facilities such as toilets, dressing rooms (vestiaires), and additional buildings.
Once completed, Gicumbi Stadium will accommodate more than 5,000 seated fans and is expected to officially be ready by 4 July 2026.
The rehabilitation of Gicumbi Stadium reflects Rwanda’s continued commitment to developing modern sports infrastructure capable of supporting talent development, community engagement, and professional football competitions across the country.
