Kigali Wetlands Restoration Works Reach 92% Completion: See the Latest Transformation

The City of Kigali on May 5, 2026 announced that restoration works for Kigali’s wetlands are ongoing, with the aim of transforming them into attractive eco-tourism destinations while improving biodiversity and water management across the city.

The rehabilitation project covers Gikondo (Kanogo), Nyabugogo, Rwampara, Rugenge Rwintare, and Kibumba wetlands, with works currently at 92% completion.

The project combines environmental restoration with urban infrastructure development through drainage rehabilitation, erosion control systems, embankment stabilisation, landscaping, and eco-tourism infrastructure construction.

Drainage and Water Flow Infrastructure

As part of the rehabilitation works, drainage channels and water pathways were constructed to improve water movement and prevent uncontrolled flooding within the wetlands.

Retention Ponds for Flood Mitigation

Retention ponds were also developed to reduce the speed of stormwater runoff and minimise flooding risks. These interconnected ponds allow water to safely pass through the wetlands while enhancing the city’s landscape and environmental quality.

Water Retention and Filtration Structures

The wetlands are further supported by water-retention structures capable of temporarily storing large volumes of rainwater during heavy rainfall events. The systems gradually release filtered water, helping reduce pollution and flood risks downstream.

Environmental and Urban Impact

The rehabilitation works have already contributed to restoring biodiversity, reducing flood risks previously affecting parts of Kigali, and improving the overall environmental beauty and resilience of the city.
