May 2026 Construction Updates: Ongoing Projects in Rwanda
Rwanda’s construction and infrastructure sector continued to record significant progress during May 2026, with major developments underway across transport, healthcare, water supply, education, housing, sports, environmental restoration, and public infrastructure.
Several strategic projects advanced toward completion, while others entered critical implementation phases aimed at improving public services, strengthening regional connectivity, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for communities across the country.
This report highlights key ongoing construction and infrastructure projects monitored during May 2026.
1. Roads & Transport Infrastructure
Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Kibari–Gatuna (Byumba–Ngondore) and Byumba Urban Roads (15.53 km)
4 May 2026 – Gicumbi District reported that construction works on the 15.53 km road project had reached 40% completion. The project involves asphalt paving and is expected to improve mobility, urban development, and connectivity within Byumba Town.

Nyange–Muhanga Road Rehabilitation and Widening Project (24 km)
25 May 2026 – RTDA reported that rehabilitation and widening works on the 24 km Nyange–Muhanga section of the Muhanga–Karongi Road had reached 91.5% completion. The road is already fully passable and is significantly improving transportation in the area.

Nyagisozi–Remera–Nshili Border Road (18 km)
4 May 2026 – Southern Province Governor Alice Kayitesi inspected the construction of the 18 km Nyagisozi–Remera–Nshili Border Road in Nyaruguru District. Construction progress stood at 17.28%, and contractors were urged to accelerate implementation to meet project timelines.

Mushubati–Nkora Road Project (41 km)
13 May 2026, Rutsiro District Official announced that the Construction of the 41 km Mushubati–Nkora road in Rutsiro District reached 86% completion. The project, valued at approximately Frw 19 billion, connects six sectors along Lake Kivu and includes major bridge works. Once completed, the road is expected to boost tourism, trade, and access to markets.

Rusizi Port Construction Project
4 May 2026 – Western Province Governor Jean Bosco Ntibitura visited the ongoing construction of Rusizi Port, where works were reported to be nearing completion. The project is expected to facilitate trade, improve transport connectivity on Lake Kivu, and support tourism development in the Western Province.


Rukomo–Ruvune–Bwisige–Gihengeri Road Rehabilitation
Gicumbi District officials inspected rehabilitation works on the Rukomo–Ruvune–Bwisige–Gihengeri Road and reported satisfactory progress.

2. Healthcare Infrastructure
Ruhengeri Referral Hospital Upgrade Project
Upgrade works commenced on the future 550-bed Ruhengeri Referral Hospital in Musanze District. The modern facility will include intensive care units (ICUs), advanced operating theatres, maternal and child healthcare facilities, diagnostic services, and teaching infrastructure.

Ngarama Hospital Upgrade Project
20 May 2026 – The Minister in Charge of Emergency Management, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Albert Murasira, conducted an inspection visit to the Ngarama Hospital Upgrade Project in Gatsibo District.
Implemented under the Jya Mbere Project, the hospital modernization represents an investment of over Frw 16 billion, including medical equipment. Phase I, valued at Frw 4.5 billion, comprising a two-storey maternity, neonatal, pediatric and surgical block, has been completed and is operational.
Construction of the remaining facilities and installation of medical equipment are ongoing. Upon completion, the hospital’s capacity will increase from 130 to 300 beds, serving both host communities and refugees. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Ruvune Health Centre Construction Project
Gicumbi District officials inspected the ongoing construction of the Ruvune Health Centre and reported satisfactory progress.

3. Water & Sanitation Infrastructure
Mutobo Water Treatment Plant Expansion
The Mutobo Water Treatment Plant reached 90% completion during May 2026. Once operational, the upgraded facility will supply more than 55,000m³ of water per day to over 354,000 residents in Musanze, Nyabihu, and Rubavu districts.
The project includes:
- New water treatment infrastructure
- 40 water reservoirs
- 135 public water points
- Expanded distribution networks

Gihengeri Water Treatment Plant Expansion
20 May 2026 – Stakeholders inspected ongoing expansion works at the Gihengeri Water Treatment Plant under the Jya Mbere Project.
The project will increase production capacity from 2,800m³/day to 4,560m³/day, improving access to clean and safe water for residents of Gatsibo and Nyagatare districts.

Musanze Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant
Construction of the Rwf 4.5 billion fecal sludge treatment plant continued during May 2026.
Built on 6.8 hectares, the facility is expected to be completed in August 2026 and will have the capacity to process 33 tonnes of waste per day and 7,000m³ of fecal sludge, improving sanitation services while producing fertilizer for agricultural use.

4. Education Infrastructure
GITI TSS Construction Project
19 May 2026 – The Minister in Charge of Emergency Management inspected the ongoing construction of GITI TSS in Giti Sector, Gicumbi District.
The project is being implemented in two phases. Phase I, valued at over Frw 2 billion, has been completed, while Phase II, valued at more than Frw 1 billion, is currently under construction and expected to be completed in June 2026.


TTC St Jean Baptiste Educational Facilities
4 May 2026 – Southern Province Governor Alice Kayitesi, together with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and district officials, inspected the construction of new educational facilities at TTC St Jean Baptiste.
The visit focused on monitoring construction quality and implementation progress.

5. Sports Infrastructure
Gicumbi Stadium Rehabilitation Project
Renovation and rehabilitation works at Gicumbi Stadium continued to advance, with synthetic turf installation reaching 98% completion.
Upon completion, the stadium will accommodate more than 5,000 spectators and is expected to be completed by 4 July 2026.

Huye International Stadium Rehabilitation Project
13 May 2026 – Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA) announced that rehabilitation works at Huye International Stadium are expected to be completed within two months.
The project includes replacement of the football pitch, installation of an improved drainage system, and modernization of key stadium infrastructure. A second phase of the project is expected to continue until June 2027.

Mukebera Football Pitch
18 May 2026 – Rutsiro District announced that final finishing works on the Mukebera Football Pitch were nearing completion, bringing the facility close to operational readiness.

6. Housing & Real Estate Developments
Heza Estate Residential Development
6 May 2026 – The Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) officially unveiled Heza Estate, a residential development located in Batsinda, Kinyinya Sector, Gasabo District.
Construction reached 90% completion during the reporting period. The development includes residential units, commercial facilities, sports courts, landscaped gardens, paved internal roads, street lighting, parking facilities, and community amenities designed for middle-income households.

7. Environmental & Climate Resilience Infrastructure
Kigali Wetlands Restoration Project
Restoration works across Kigali’s major wetlands reached 92% completion.
The project includes:
- Drainage rehabilitation systems
- Retention ponds and flood-control infrastructure
- Erosion control measures
- Walkways and cycling tracks
- Landscaping and biodiversity restoration
The project covers the Gikondo, Nyabugogo, Kibumba, Rwampara, and Rugenge–Rwintare wetlands and is expected to strengthen climate resilience while creating new recreational and eco-tourism spaces.

8. Public Buildings & Government Infrastructure
Rwanda Development Board (RDB) Headquarters Rehabilitation
Rwanda Housing Authority reported that renovation and rehabilitation works at the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) Headquarters are scheduled for completion in June 2027.
The project is estimated to cost more than Frw 2.1 billion and forms part of ongoing efforts to modernize government infrastructure.

The month of May 2026 demonstrated continued momentum across Rwanda’s construction sector, with substantial progress recorded in transport, healthcare, water supply, education, housing, sports, environmental restoration, and public infrastructure projects.
Several projects are approaching completion and are expected to deliver significant socio-economic benefits through improved service delivery, enhanced connectivity, increased access to clean water and healthcare, expanded educational infrastructure, and strengthened climate resilience.
