Mutobo Water Plant Reaches 90% Completion, Water Supply Expected by July 2026
Project Overview
WASAC Group announced that more than 354,000 residents in the districts of Musanze, Nyabihu and Rubavu will receive improved access to clean water after the Mutobo Water Treatment Plant reaches completion.
The upgraded plant is currently 90% complete and will produce approximately 55,500 cubic meters of water per day.

The Mutobo Water Treatment Plant is located in:
- Gataraga Sector
- Rubindi Cell
- Musanze District, Rwanda

Project Cost
- Total Investment: Approximately RWF 14 Billion
Key Infrastructure Included
The project includes:
- Construction of a new water treatment facility
- Construction of 40 water reservoirs
- Installation of 4 water pumping stations
- Development of 135 public water taps
- Expansion of water distribution networks across affected districts
Beneficiary Areas
The upgraded plant will supply water to:
- Musanze District
- Nyabihu District
- Rubavu District
- Parts of Burera District
The project is expected to significantly reduce:
- Water shortages
- Water rationing
- Dependence on unsafe water sources
Expected Impact
According to WASAC officials:
- Residents currently receiving water once or twice a week will begin receiving more reliable supply.
- Water distribution rationing is expected to end starting July 2026.
- Communities relying on unsafe swamp or flowing water sources will gain access to treated clean water.
Energy Consumption
The plant will consume approximately:
- RWF 30 Million per month in electricity costs for pumping and water distribution operations.
