March 2026 Project Updates: Completed & Inaugurated Projects

March 2026 saw the completion and inauguration of several key infrastructure projects across Rwanda, improving transport, water access, healthcare, and sports facilities.

1. Kibuye–Kiziba Refugee Camp Road – Karongi District

On 18th March 2026, the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) announced that the Kibuye–Kiziba Refugee Camp Road had reached 100% completion and was fully paved with asphalt.

The project aims to improve access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and markets, while also supporting economic activities and environmental management for both refugees and host communities.

Impact:

  • Improved mobility for residents, students, and traders
  • Easier access for ambulances and healthcare services
  • Enhanced business conditions along the road corridor

Local businesses have expressed satisfaction, noting a significant improvement in daily operations and working conditions.

2. Kariba–Jenda–Masizi Water Supply System – Nyamagabe District

On 25th March 2026, the Mayor of Nyamagabe District officially inaugurated the Kariba–Jenda–Masizi water supply system in Musange Sector, in partnership with WaterAid and WASAC Group.

This marks the first completed network under the district’s five-year $62 million WASH program.

Project Highlights:

  • Network Length: 7.5 km
  • Beneficiaries: Over 2,000 people
  • Part of broader program targeting full district water coverage by 2030

The project is part of a broader program that has already delivered five water networks serving over 88,000 people

The initiative significantly contributes to improving health, dignity, and gender equality by reducing the burden of water collection, particularly for women and girls.

3. Kibungo Level II Teaching Hospital – ICU & Operating Theatre

On 19th March 2026, the Kibungo Level II Teaching Hospital officially inaugurated a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU), fully equipped at a total cost of over Rwf 500 million.

The facility was developed through a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Operation Smile Rwanda, and includes:

  • 10 ICU/HDU beds for critical care patients
  • 4 operating rooms for surgical procedures

Impact:

  • Expands access to specialized and critical care services in the Eastern Province
  • Reduces referrals to Kigali hospitals such as CHUK and Kanombe Military Hospital
  • Serves patients from Ngoma, Kirehe, and Kayonza districts

Kibungo Hospital currently serves over 400,000 residents, and in 2025 alone, more than 500 patients had to be referred to Kigali for ICU and specialized care.

With this new facility, patients can now access life-saving treatment closer to home, reducing travel time and improving emergency response for critical cases. The infrastructure will also support medical training, enhancing practical learning for future healthcare professionals.

4. FERWAFA Hotel – Kigali

On 30th March 2026, Rwanda’s football governing body (FERWAFA) officially inaugurated its long-awaited accommodation facility in Remera, after nearly 11 years of construction.

The project was developed in partnership with FIFA through the FIFA Forward Programme and was launched during the FIFA Series held in Kigali (26th–30th March 2026).

Project Overview:

  • Development Type: Four-star accommodation facility
  • Facilities:
    • 42 bedrooms (capacity of over 80 guests)
    • Two dining halls
    • Office spaces
    • Two large meeting rooms

Project Timeline:

  • Construction started in August 2015
  • Works were suspended in 2018 due to financial constraints
  • Construction resumed in August 2021 with FIFA support
  • Additional funding of over $4.5 million (Rwf 5 billion) was injected in 2023

Impact:

  • Provides a dedicated base for Rwanda’s national football teams (men, women, and youth)
  • Reduces operational costs related to accommodation and logistics
  • Supports sports development and professional training environments

The facility will also host federation events, meetings, and workshops, while being accessible to other sports federations and clubs. Its completion marks a major step forward in strengthening Rwanda’s sports infrastructure and talent development ecosystem.

March 2026 highlights Rwanda’s continued progress in delivering completed infrastructure that directly improves daily life. From upgraded roads and water systems to advanced healthcare and sports facilities, these projects enhance service delivery, strengthen local economies, and support long-term national development.
