January 2026 Project Updates: Major Ongoing Construction Projects Across Rwanda
Rwanda’s construction sector maintained strong momentum in January 2026, with major projects across the health, water, energy, transport, sanitation, and real estate sectors recording measurable progress. As reported in February 2026, the updates below reflect project implementation status as of January 2026, highlighting ongoing investments that continue to strengthen public services, improve connectivity, and support national economic growth.
Health Infrastructure Projects
- Nyamata Maternity Ward in Bugesera District
On 21 January 2026, the Rwanda Housing Authority reported that the new maternity ward at Nyamata Hospital had reached 80.49% completion.
Funded by the Imbuto Foundation at a cost of Rwf 6 billion, the project began in 2023 and will nearly double maternity bed capacity. The facility will include:
- 120 beds for mothers
- 60 incubator beds
- An outpatient section

2. Rehabilitation and expansion works at Ngarama Hospital
Rehabilitation and expansion works at Ngarama Hospital continue to advance steadily.
According to updates from Gatsibo District, Phase 1 has been completed, while Phase 2 is currently under construction. The ongoing works include a new multi-storey hospital block, with active formwork, scaffolding, and masonry works underway to expand healthcare capacity.


3. Construction works for the Nyarubuye Medicalized Health Center
Construction of the Nyarubuye Medicalized Health Center is progressing, with reinforced concrete columns erected and structural works taking shape across the site.
Valued at over Rwf 6 billion, the project has completed foundation works and is moving into vertical construction, which will significantly enhance healthcare service delivery in the area once operational.


Water and Sanitation Projects
4. Rehabilitation and extension of eight water supply systems in Nyabihu District
On 21 January 2026, WASAC announced that rehabilitation and extension works on eight water supply systems in Nyabihu District had reached 91% completion.
Implemented under the Stunting Prevention and Reduction Project (SPRP) and funded by the World Bank through RBC, the project will provide clean water to over 39,000 residents in the sectors of Rambura, Jenda, Mulinga, Jomba, and Shyira.
Covering a 94-kilometre network, the works include:
- Upgrading old systems
- Expanding pipelines
- Protecting water sources
- Constructing reservoirs and water points
Completed systems such as Birembo and Nyiragikokora–Sukiro are already supplying water to communities, schools, and health facilities, with no household now walking more than 500 metres to fetch water.

5. Muhazi Water Treatment Plant
As of 20 January 2026, the Muhazi Water Treatment Plant was reported to be 92% complete.
In its first phase, the plant will supply clean water to 543,397 residents, including communities in Gatsibo and Kayonza districts. The project includes:
- 256 kilometres of water pipelines
- 11 water reservoirs with 7,100 cubic metres storage capacity
Located along Lake Muhazi in Murambi Sector, the facility will significantly expand access to safe water across multiple sectors in both districts


6. Mutobo Water Treatment Plant – Musanze District
In January 2026, construction works to expand and upgrade the Mutobo Water Treatment Plant in Busogo Sector, Musanze District were ongoing. Once completed, the plant’s treatment capacity will increase significantly from 12,500 cubic metres per day to 55,500 cubic metres per day. The project is designed as a long-term solution to water supply challenges, increasing the availability of clean and safe water for residents of Musanze and Burera districts, as well as selected sectors in Nyabihu and Rubavu districts.


7. Construction of the Musanze Faecal sludge treatment plant
Construction of the Faecal sludge treatment plant in Musanze reached 71% progress by 30 January 2026, according to MININFRA.
The facility will introduce modern wastewater management solutions, improving sanitation services, environmental protection, and public health outcomes in Musanze and surrounding areas.

8. Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant and Landfill Project – Rubavu District
In January 2026, construction works continued on the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant and Landfill Project in Rubavu District, a major sanitation infrastructure initiative aimed at improving waste management systems.
Once completed, the facility will enhance sanitation services, protect public health, and support environmentally sustainable waste treatment and disposal for Rubavu District and surrounding areas. The project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen urban sanitation infrastructure and improve living conditions in fast-growing urban centres.

9. Muvumba Multipurpose Dam
Construction of the Muvumba Multipurpose Dam across Rukomo, Gatunda, and Karama sectors reached 44.17% completion in January 2026.
Spanning 796 hectares and costing approximately €124 million (over Rwf 211 billion), the project began in 2022 and is expected to deliver major socio-economic benefits, including:
- Irrigation for 10,000 hectares of farmland
- 1 MW hydropower generation
- 50,000 cubic metres of clean water daily
The project is financed primarily by the African Development Bank and the Government of Rwanda, with full completion scheduled for November 2026.


10. Construction of the Gishanda Dam
Construction of the Gishanda Dam in Kabare Sector had reached 20% completion by 29 January 2026.
Once completed, the dam will provide large-scale irrigation water to farming communities in Kabare and Rwinkwavu, boosting agricultural productivity and food security.

Energy Infrastructure Projects
11. Extension works at Gabiro Substation
REG announced that extension works at Gabiro Substation, together with the construction of the 110 kV transmission line linking Gabiro to the new Nyagatare Substation, had reached 70% completion.
Once completed, the project will strengthen electricity transmission capacity in Eastern Province, improve power reliability, and support growing industrial and residential demand.

12. Bugesera Substation
On 15 January 2026, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) management inspected the Bugesera Substation, which has reached 30% completion. Once completed, the substation is expected to play a key role in stabilizing power supply and improving electricity reliability in Bugesera District.

13. Construction of the 5.2 MW solar power plant in Rwinkwavu
On 29 January 2026, Kayonza District reported that construction of the 5.2 MW solar power plant in Rwinkwavu had reached 90% completion. The facility is being developed to supply reliable electricity to the BioNTech vaccine manufacturing plant.

Transport Infrastructure Projects
14. Base–Butaro–Kidaho road project
As of January 2026, works on the 63-kilometre Base–Butaro–Kidaho road corridor were progressing well.
The Kidaho–Butaro section has already been opened to traffic, with final finishing works underway. The full project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, significantly improving transport connectivity and economic activity across Burera District.

15. Nyagisozi–Remera–Nshili Border Asphalt Road (18 km)
The Rwf 16+ billion road project is progressing, aiming to boost trade and local mobility. Authorities have called for faster payment of compensation to affected residents to avoid delays and ensure smooth implementation. The project started on 5 June 2025 and is expected to be completed by 5 December 2026

Housing and Real Estate Projects
16. Royal Golf View Apartment Hotel
Construction at the Royal Golf View Apartment Hotel continued steadily through January, with work now firmly in the final phase. Finishing activities are progressing across the project, and all key milestones remain aligned with the planned June 2026 completion, as confirmed in the 18 January 2026 update from DND Developers.

17. Construction works for housing to resettle families affected by the development of the Rusumo Hydropower Plant
Construction of resettlement houses for families affected by the Rusumo Hydropower Plant is nearly complete, with handover expected in early 2026. The project supports 80 families and includes essential infrastructure such as an ECD center and livestock shelters, with over US$4.2 million allocated for housing and related facilities.
