Rwanda Marked Heroes Day 2026 with New Infrastructure Projects Launched Across Districts

This year marked the 32nd anniversary of Heroes Day, celebrated under the theme: “Heroism and Unity of Rwandans: Pillars of Development.”

Commemorations took place across all districts, where citizens gathered to honor national heroes and reflect on the values that should continue to guide Rwanda toward a better future.

To mark the occasion, districts across the country inaugurated key infrastructure projects supporting development in housing, healthcare, water supply, transportation, and urban growth.

Below is a district-by-district overview of the major infrastructure achievements launched on Heroes Day 2026:

  1. Gasabo District

The Vice Mayor in charge of Urbanization and Infrastructure, together with the Executive Secretary of Gasabo District, joined residents of Jabana Sector to inaugurate community-led infrastructure projects achieved through citizen participation during the year.

2. Musanze District

Heroes Day celebrations at district level were held in Muhoza Sector, marked by the inauguration of: 22 buildings completed under Phase 2 of Musanze City urban upgrading project. Led by Governor Maurice Mugabowagahunde and various leaders, the event also included tree planting around the newly completed buildings to promote environmental sustainability.

3. Gakenke District

Celebrations at district level took place in Gakenke Sector, attended by Mayor Vestine Mukandayisenga, security officials, and residents.

A new bridge was officially inaugurated, significantly improving transportation and connectivity in the area.

4. Muhanga District

The event was held in Ryaruyange Village, Rwigerero Cell, Mushishiro Sector, where the Rwigerero Second Generation Health Post was officially inaugurated by Hon. B. Kalinijabo alongside other officials.

The facility was built through a partnership between the District and SFH Rwanda and is designed to improve access to essential healthcare services for the community. The facility offers:

  • Basic health services
  • Maternity services
  • Dental care
  • Eye care

Future services will include:

  • Family planning education
  • Nutrition and anti-stunting programs

5. Kamonyi District

The Matengu Bridge, linking Rukoma and Karama Sectors towards Kayenzi Sector, was inaugurated.

This bridge replaces a previously damaged crossing that had disrupted transport and trade. The event was attended by District Mayor Dr. Sylvere NAHAYO

6. Nyanza District

The Burakari Bridge in Busoro was launched during the celebrations.

Patrick Kajyambere, Acting Mayor of Nyanza District, together with district leaders and security officials, emphasized that such infrastructure reflects the spirit of heroism and dedication of Rwanda’s heroes.

7. Nyamagabe District

A maternity house at Nyamagabe Health Center was inaugurated by the Chairperson of the District Council, Mrs. Clotilde Uwamahoro, along with the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs.

This facility will significantly improve maternal healthcare services in the district.

8. Huye District

Several infrastructure projects were launched across sectors, including:

  • Water pipelines: Kiduha pipeline in Gishamvu Sector (9 km) and Mahata pipeline in Karama Sector (10.5 km)
  • Kagishwi Bridge in Kigoma Sector
  • New classrooms
  • Public toilets
  • Coffee shop facilities

9. Gisagara District

The Munazi Health Post in Munazi Cell, Save Sector was inaugurated in partnership with SFH Rwanda. At the District level, the celebration was held in Save Sector, attended by the District Mayor together with leaders from the security officials.

10. Rutsiro District

Infrastructure activities included the handover of new houses to families affected by natural disasters, supporting resettlement and community resilience. The event was attended by Mayor Kayitesi Dative and security officials.

11. Ngororero District

Celebrations in Nyange Sector were attended by: Western Province Executive Secretary Uwambajemariya Florence, District Mayor Nkusi Christophe, District leaders, security organs, and residents

In Nyange Sector, paved roads were inaugurated leading to Sector office and Nyange B Health Center

At the health center, new facilities were launched including:

  • A maternity house
  • Laboratory services
  • Additional healthcare units

The Heroes Day 2026 celebrations across Rwanda showcased how the country continues to honor its heroes through practical development achievements — improving healthcare, housing, water access, roads, and urban infrastructure.

These projects not only strengthen communities but also reflect Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to unity, resilience, and sustainable development.
