Aerial Views of Kigali’s Wetlands: Progress, Restoration, and a Greener Future

The recent aerial photos shared by Kigali Wetlands Park on LinkedIn give us a completely new way to see Kigali. From above, the city’s restored wetlands look like a living green ribbon weaving through the urban landscape; quietly doing the important work of protecting homes, streets, and people from floods and environmental damage.

Seen from the sky, each wetland tells its own story of progress. New ponds, waterways, green corridors, and flood-control systems are reshaping Kigali into a safer, greener, and more climate-resilient city.

1. Kibumba

Kibumba wetland had reached 83.21% restoration by December 2025. New ponds, channels, and cycling and walking lanes were already taking shape reviving natural hydrology, strengthening biodiversity, and allowing visitors to explore the area without disturbing the ecosystem.

2. Rugenge- Rwintare

Rugenge–Rwintare Wetland will feature a large 5-hectare pond that collects water from Rwampara and Gikondo. This major water body is designed to manage stormwater while also showcasing Rwanda’s growing commitment to environmental protection and sustainable urban design.

3. Nyabugogo

As of December 2025, rehabilitation works in Nyabugogo Wetland had reached 65.9% completion, keeping the project firmly on track. The restoration has been strengthening natural water storage, reducing flood risks, improving air quality, and creating greener, healthier spaces for nearby Kigali residents.

4. Gikondo

By December 2025, restoration in Gikondo Wetland had reached 78%. Four new ponds were already reshaping the area, capturing stormwater, slowing runoff, and reducing flood risks. The site was steadily becoming a greener, safer, and more resilient part of the city.

From the sky, Kigali’s wetlands tell a powerful story—one of restoration, resilience, and renewal. Each site is progressing at its own pace, but together they form a living network that protects the city, supports biodiversity, and redefines urban planning.
