About the Company:
UMC JV Ltd is seeking a highly experienced and results-driven MEP Airport Project Director to lead the end-to-end delivery of all Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems for the New Kigali International Airport project in Rwanda. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing all MEP engineering, design coordination, procurement, construction execution, and commissioning activities while ensuring strict compliance with international airport standards and regulatory requirements. This is a critical leadership position for a candidate with proven expertise in large-scale airport or aviation infrastructure projects and the ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary teams on-site.
About the Role: The MEP Director will oversee the strategic leadership, project management, design oversight, commercial management, and quality assurance of MEP systems for the airport project.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Planning:
- Develop and execute MEP strategies aligned with project objectives, timeline, and budget.
- Define the MEP execution plan from the design to the commissioning stages.
- Prepare workforce plans and MEP organisation structure in line with project needs.
Project Management & Execution:
- Lead and coordinate all MEP-related activities across design, procurement, and construction phases.
- Monitor project progress and ensure timely delivery of MEP works within approved budgets and schedules.
- Direct and manage MEP subcontractors, consultants, and vendors to meet project deliverables.
Design & Technical Oversight:
- Oversee the MEP design process and ensure integration with architectural and structural elements.
- Review technical submittals, material approvals, and method statements.
- Ensure engineering practices and installations meet airport codes, ICAO/IATA standards, and local regulations.
Commercial & Contract Management:
- Manage procurement and contract negotiations for MEP packages.
- Monitor and control project costs related to MEP scope, ensuring alignment with commercial targets.
- Evaluate change orders, variations, and claims with the commercial team.
Quality Assurance, Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure implementation of QA/QC procedures, HSE plans, and risk assessments across all MEP activities.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and compliance reviews to maintain the highest standards of safety and workmanship.
- Enforce environmental, health, and safety regulations in all MEP-related work.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (required)
- Master’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Management (preferred)
- A professional engineering license or PMP certification is an added advantage
Required Skills:
- Minimum 15 years of overall experience in MEP works within large-scale construction projects – Airport experience.
- Minimum 10 years in senior management or director-level roles
- Minimum 5 years of proven experience delivering airport or aviation infrastructure projects
- International experience in airport/aviation megaprojects is highly preferred
- Deep understanding of MEP systems, including HVAC, power distribution, ELV, plumbing, fire systems, and BHS/FIDS/SCADA systems
- Experience in managing design, procurement, and construction activities in compliance with airport authority requirements
- Strong command of ERP systems (preferably SAP)
