Maintenance Manager – ONOMO Kigali, Rwanda

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Maintenance Manager to join our dynamic team in Kigali. Reporting to the General Manager, the Maintenance Manager, is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the hotel’s maintenance and engineering operations to ensure that the property remains in excellent condition, as well as ensuring that all equipment and systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.) function properly. The role collaborates with other departments to support guest satisfaction, health and safety standards, and cost-effective facility operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance Management

  • Supervise the preventative maintenance program for all hotel systems to minimize downtime and guest impact.
  • Ensure routine maintenance tasks are completed on schedule.
  • Respond to emergency repair requests and resolve any issues promptly to minimise disruptions to guest services.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the engineering team, ensuring high levels of efficiency, productivity, and morale.
  • Facilitate training and development programs for the Maintenance team.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching to the Maintenance team.

Cost Control & Budget Monitoring

  • Track expenses related to the Maintenance department, ensuring adherence to the allocated budget.
  • Identify areas for cost-saving, including energy consumption, repair expenses, and procurement of supplies.
  • Monitor utility usage and implement measures to reduce energy consumption and costs.

Guest Experience Management

  • Regularly inspect guest rooms and public spaces to ensure engineering systems are operating smoothly.
  • Work with operations teams to address guest complaints related to engineering issues.

Vendor & Supplier Management

  • Oversee relationships with third-party vendors and contractors for maintenance services and repairs, ensuring high standards of service delivery.
  • Negotiate and renew service contracts for equipment and building systems.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Maintain detailed records of all maintenance work, repairs, and inspections.
  • Provide regular reports to senior management on the status of engineering systems, ongoing projects, and budget performance.

Qualifications & Competencies Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Building Engineering is generally required.
  • Certifications related to HVAC, plumbing, fire safety, or any specialised engineering systems used in hotels are an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role, ideally in a hospitality environment, with some experience in a management capacity.
  • In-depth knowledge of all Maintenance operations and how they integrate with other hotel departments (e.g. Kitchen, Housekeeping).
  • Possesses strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to build solid, open relationships with team members, other Heads of Departments, and external partners.
  • Strong leadership skills and a track record of building and maintaining high-performing teams.
  • Strong will to work very flexible working hours and can work under pressure.
  • Ability to delegate and provide constructive feedback.
  • Integrity and ability to promote fair and inclusive management practices.
