10 Key Components of the New CHUK Hospital Complex: Helipad, Medical Gas Systems, Fire Fighting, Power Infrastructure

The new CHUK facility in Masaka is one of Rwanda’s largest healthcare infrastructure projects to date. Constructed by Shanghai Construction Group Co. Ltd at an estimated cost of RWF 85 billion (approximately 580 million Yuan) and funded by the Government of China, the project is nearing completion. According to the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Yusuf Murangwa, the project has reached 98% completion. The phased relocation of the hospital is expected to begin in March 2026 and continue through September. Once fully operational, the facility will accommodate 827 beds, more than double the previous capacity of approximately 400.

Beyond expanding capacity, the complex integrates multiple critical infrastructure systems. Here are 10 key components that define this modern hospital development, based on IGIHE.com’s editorial report and video coverage from 12 February 2026.

Helipad for Emergency Transport

A dedicated helicopter landing pad enabling rapid transfer of critically ill patients from across the country.

Medical Gas Production Facility

An on-site oxygen generation system with internal pipelines distributing medical gases to wards.

Fire Fighting Systems

Installed fire-fighting equipment capable of directing water to specific floors within the multi-storey buildings.

Backup Power Infrastructure

Two generators operating based on electricity demand to ensure continuity of services.

Solar Energy System

Solar equipment installed on the rooftop as part of the hospital’s energy infrastructure.

Multi-Storey Modern Buildings

The new Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK) at Masaka includes three major multi-storey inpatient buildings, with some rising up to five floors. The complex features 18 operating theatres, modern patient wards, elevators, and fully accessible pathways, reflecting advanced hospital infrastructure standards.

Natural Ventilation Design

The buildings are designed to allow natural airflow without relying heavily on air‑conditioning. This reduces energy consumption and improves indoor air quality.

Landscaping & External Works

Paved internal roads, organized parking areas, and green spaces integrated into the complex.

Interior Design and Furniture

The new CHUK interiors feature modern finishes with bright lighting, installed patient beds, and durable furniture built to withstand high‑traffic use. Waiting areas are thoughtfully arranged with ergonomic seating, while pediatric spaces are designed with child‑friendly colors and wall art to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Patient–Staff Communication System

Bedside call-button systems allowing patients to alert nurses and medical staff when assistance is required.
